Preparing for Breastfeeding
This workshop is essential if you intend to breastfeed your baby.
The early weeks with your new baby can be much more challenging than you might expect.
Many women and babies experience initial difficulties with learning to breastfeeding.
This workshop is designed to help you to avoid these common problems, or to be able to find effective solutions and to get an idea of what it will really be like to care for your baby and breastfeed after the birth.
Breastfeeding is partly instinctual and partly a learnt skill. This workshop will pass on the vital learning that happens naturally by observation in a breastfeeding culture and needs to be learnt in ours.
You will learn practically with a doll, how to hold and position your baby for feeding in a variety of ways during the day and at night. The physiology of how milk is made will be explained, so that you understand how you can help your baby to attach successfully to the breast for feeding.
We will also be exploring everyday babycare and 'attachment parenting' - the natural way to nurture your baby. This will include information about swaddling newborns, wearing your baby and the benefits of both partners using a baby carrier or sling.
The best time to attend is in the last three months of pregnancy. A partner's support in a breastfeeding family is important and your partner or closest support person is highly recommended to come with you, if possible.
