Professional Training

Active Birth teaching and teacher training was founded by Janet Balaskas in the 1980's and has been profoundly influential in bringing about change and transformation in birth education and midwifery practice. The current training programme was founded in 2003 by Janet Balaskes and Alice Charlwood.

We welcome applications from childbirth educators, midwives, doulas and  pregnancy yoga teachers who want to increase their professional skills. We also accept women with no previous professional experience who are passionate and  knowledgeable about birth and wish to become active birth yoga teachers.

Module 1: Active Birth - 4 day intensive
This module can be attended on its own or as a prelude to further training.

Module 2: Yoga for Pregnancy - 4 day intensive
Although not compulsory, we highly recommend that applicants for Module 2 also attend module 1 before or after the course.

Module 3: Active Birth Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training
Entrance requirement  - completion of modules 1 and 2. This is an apprenticeship training which runs over a flexible time scale and involves a number of class observations, supervised teaching practice and written work.  Completion of module 3 leads to becoming an Associate of the Active Birth Centre.

Module 4: Teaching Active Birth   - 2 day intensive
This is a post-graduate course for trainees who have completed Module 3 or for practising birth professionals. 

Module 5: Postnatal Yoga - 3 day intensive 
Learn how to teach yoga safely to new mothers in the postnatal months 

All of the above modules are held at the
Active Birth Centre in North London and tuition is in English.
