Resources for a water birth

If you're contemplating a water birth - this video will inform and inspire you

This inspirational video features the birth experiences of three women at home and in hospital. The mothers and midwives involved are interviewed and the film is introduced by Janet Balaskas.

by Janet Balaskas and Amy Hardie - Running time 45 minutes.

Clinical guidelines for a hospital with water birth pool facility
by Janet Balaskas

A free practical booklet for midwives. It gives guidance on the safe use of water birth pools. Ideal for midwives who do not have much clinical experience in this method of delivery or wish to increase their knowledge. Updated regularly the contents are based on protocols from units with a large experience of water birth and feedback from mothers and midwives.

Water birth workshop
with Janet Balaskas

This inspiring and informative workshop is essential for anyone considering using a water pool for labour or birth, and of interest to anyone who is pregnant or working with women in labour. You will be introduced to the philosophy behind water birth as well as the history of the pioneers who first explored the benefits of immersion in warm water during labour.

The workshop will include an explanation of how and why water helps the birthing process, and detailed information about monitoring, positions, birth underwater, bonding and breastfeeding in water.

Both practical and experiential aspects will be covered, as well as the latest guidelines and research. The workshop will also cover the special capabilities of the newborn in an aquatic environment, and encourage parents to explore the possibilities for ‘baby swim’ for very young babies. Slides and video extracts will be shown.

Keith Brainin will be there to answer any questions concerning the use of the portable pool system. Please bring your swimsuit and a towel if you are interested in trying the pool!

"The pool was great. I felt that I was in a safe warm space, like a sort of womb around me and that I had more control over the situation."

"I felt fantastic as soon as I got in - it took all the pain out of my back and pelvis - I didn't expect it to be so good."
