Birth Story no. 30: Victoria – Empower yourself, even when plans go awry

No matter how much planning we do, life often has other ideas. As the old saying goes though, it’s not about what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens.

We loved hearing how even when plans changed completely, Victoria and her husband Perry used Active Birth techniques to empower themselves and welcome their precious son into the world.  Here’s their letter to us…

Dear Janet and Lynn

I wanted to say a massive thank you for the hypnobirthing course we took in November!

This was one of the best weekends myself and my husband have had. We really reconnected as a couple (not that we weren’t already!) and felt relaxed, calm and empowered.

I was aiming for a homebirth and had everything prepared from the pool to the Clary sage. Unfortunately, our little guy had different plans and ended up being 16 days late. I had to face my fear of hospitals and injections during the induction on the labour ward and ended up having an epidural and ventouse delivery.

Janet’s words during the course got us through: “Accept help with open arms,” and my breathing exercises kept me calm throughout.

The experience was far removed from what I had envisaged and looking back I was probably in a bit of shock for first few weeks, but it was manageable, and I got through it thanks to the techniques I had learned.

My husband was a bit of a sceptic at first, but after the course and our labour he is a huge advocate and sings your praises to anyone who will listen. We are both still using the breathing techniques for general calmness too.

Thank you

Victoria & Perry
